The weight of the tourist experience in visited landscapes

29/04/2026

CISPAC will host, on 5 May at 11:30 in Room 103, a lecture dedicated to analysing the role of the tourist experience in shaping visited landscapes, addressing tourism from critical, social and sustainability-oriented perspectives.

The session will include a presentation by Duarte B. Morais, professor at North Carolina State University and co-founder of the People-First Tourism movement, an approach that advocates placing people —especially local communities— at the centre of tourism activity. His research focuses on the relationship between tourism, community wellbeing and sustainable development, as well as on the role of local entrepreneurship and social participation in tourism destinations. In his talk, entitled “The People First Tourism Manifesto”, he will present this approach, which promotes deeper connections between visitors and host communities, as well as positive impacts on territories.

He will be joined by Jakson R. R. Soares, researcher at the University of A Coruña and member of CISPAC, who will address the topic of “Conscious Tourism and the positive dimension of the tourist experience”. This perspective is part of an international line of thought that understands tourism as a transformative experience grounded in ethics, sustainability and mutual respect between visitors, communities and heritage.

The session will be moderated by Raquel Santiago Romo (UDC-CISPAC) and will open a space for debate on new ways of understanding tourism beyond its economic impact, considering the social, cultural and environmental dimensions of the tourist experience.
