On October 3, 2025, San Simón Island (Redondela) will host the conference The Illuminated Parchment: Art, Music and Technology in the Study of the Medieval Codex, organized by the Consello da Cultura Galega and the Concello de Redondela as part of the cycle Seíam eu… en San Simón.
The activity, coordinated by Francisco Prado-Vilar, researcher at CISPAC and professor in the Department of Art History at USC, offers an interdisciplinary immersion into the multiple lives of the medieval codex as a vehicle of knowledge and a space for visual and sonic innovation.
The program brings together renowned specialists who will analyze manuscripts essential to Galician culture —such as the Codex Calixtinus, the Tombo A, the Trojan Chronicle or various musical codices— from the perspectives of art history, musicology, conservation sciences and digital technologies. Sessions will cover topics ranging from pigments and illumination techniques to medieval musical notation, as well as the study of narratives and images from the period.
Registration is free and limited to 60 participants, on a first-come, first-served basis via the Consello da Cultura Galega website. Maritime transport and lunch on the island are included.
