CISPAC hosts an event on wetland restoration and the future of Serra do Xistral

01/10/2026

Researchers, practitioners, representatives of public authorities and local stakeholders will come together at this open event to share experiences of co-creation, participation and wetland restoration. The aim is to explore how lessons from WaterLANDS and other European initiatives can help build a shared vision for the future of Serra do Xistral, drawing on perspectives from the different disciplines that study landscapes.

The session on Wednesday 14 October will take place in the CISPAC Events Room, in the Fontán Building at the Cidade da Cultura in Santiago de Compostela. Through discussions and participatory workshops, participants will explore experiences from WaterLANDS, the characteristics of the landscape and the role of its stakeholders, as well as opportunities for collaboration and governance in restoration. The European projects EUROlakes and SpongeBoost have also been invited to enrich the discussion with further experiences.

On Thursday 15 October, a field visit to Serra do Xistral will offer participants an opportunity to discover the landscape and hear first-hand accounts from local stakeholders. The visit will connect the previous day’s discussions with the landscape itself and with opportunities for conservation, restoration and participation. Return transport from Santiago de Compostela will be organised.

WaterLANDS is a project funded by the European Horizon 2020 programme that promotes wetland restoration and shared learning across landscapes. One of its central elements is the involvement of local communities in restoration processes, bringing together diverse knowledge, land uses and interests to develop joint solutions.

Those interested in attending can sign up through the registration form. More info on the following document.
