On Saturday, June 7, the ESMAART project will hold its second co-design workshop in O Canizo (A Gudiña, Ourense). This session will serve as a participatory space for collaborative work and collective reflection on the challenges and opportunities of a just energy transition in rural Galicia.

This second workshop will focus on the analysis of energy and territorial metabolism. It will begin with the presentation of a study on existing infrastructure, the parish’s energy demand, and the territory’s generation potential. Afterwards, a new application developed within the framework of the project will be used to simulate and debate different scenarios for energy self-sufficiency and potential surpluses, encouraging community discussion around sustainable and alternative models.

The research project “ESMAART” (Social Approach for the Environmental Improvement of Traditional Rural Settlements) develops a rural planning methodology aimed at improving the quality of life for inhabitants and supporting a fair and equitable ecological transition. It is based on the premise that rural areas offer a wide range of social and environmental opportunities, making them a cornerstone of sustainable development and climate adaptation processes. The energy transition must ensure the preservation of rural intrinsic values as well as a fair distribution of the associated costs. The ESMAART methodology promotes the integration of necessary infrastructure through participatory and inclusive processes, focusing on social acceptance through endogenous models based on territorial metabolism.
